Best Practices

Respecting marine life is key to getting the most out of a dive.

“Conservation is giving life”

Our favorite phrase, inherited from our friend Àlex Lorente.
It’s a deeply rooted sentiment that we share with everyone through our dive site briefings, eco briefings, and courses.

Control your buoyancy and maintain a 1.5 m distance from the bottom and the walls. Remember to check your weights and stay in a horizontal position.

Pay close attention to your fins to avoid hitting or stirring up sediment. Choose short fins and remember to kick gently.

Make sure your equipment, such as your pressure gauge, octopus, and other hanging objects, is properly secured to avoid dragging on the seafloor.

Don’t use lights to search in holes or cracks — this helps avoid disturbing the bottom or hidden animals.

Do not feed the fish to avoid interfering with the food chain. Don’t scare, chase, or touch them — you may make them more vulnerable.

Choose short fins and remember to kick gently. It is strictly forbidden to touch or remove any living or dead organism.

Limit your time inside tunnels and caves to reduce the impact of bubbles on the organisms living on the ceiling.

Avoid leaning on your camera or any part of your body. Maintain buoyancy and keep your distance from the bottom with gentle movements.

ATTENTION

Fragile habitats

Posidonia

Posidonia is a protected species and habitat, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It offers shelter and protection to local marine life.

Gorgonians

Gorgonians are coral-like species that grow very slowly. They feed by filtration and are highly sensitive to sediment suspension.

Caves

Unique species live in this fragile habitat, and are sensitive to any disturbance. Bubbles damage ceilings through both direct impact and suffocation.
Control your buoyancy and distance from the bottom, walls, and ceiling to avoid contact.

Eco Diving Strategic Plan

The dive centers authorized to dive in the Medes Islands have developed a Strategic Plan to improve dive quality in the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands, and the Baix Ter.

With this plan, we will apply best practices in eco diving to ensure the sustainability of our activity in this highly valuable protected area.
